"BLARG, Rotas copy JDM wheels" -JDMleetfanbois. Well here is a set of SSR and here is a set of Work. It might be because I am blind, but these look really similar. So then, who is copying who?

Funnily, Japanese tuning culture is actually trying to keep up with American style right now. The tables have turned. I would find the sources for this, but I CBF. Speedhunters talks about it all the time.

I think all wheels look about the same. As with music, there are a few formulas that work and they all follow them.

Care to explain? I think I know what you are getting it at. The Japanese are trying to emulate us instead of vice versa, but I don't really see it. Then again, I only care about their race cars.

At the risk of unrestricted flame war, who fucking cares. At this point all wheels look pretty much the same. Sad but true. It's like trying to name which brand 4" stilletos your current stripper is wearing.

There usually are a few designs. But these look like the same exact wheel. Kind of like this. Rota Titans

I mean I personally don't care. I am just tried of people saying rota rips other designs off. It is pretty obvious a lot of companies do it off each other. As long as it looks good, it is light, and cheap it works for me.

Kinja'd!!! daender > YSI-what can brown do for you

I think the main issue with Rota's designs is that they copy Japanese wheels but they lack the quality of the originals where as those SSR and Work wheels you posted are probably close in quality, which is usually pretty good quality stuff.

Kinja'd!!!

Also Rotas tend to do that a lot, but then again they're cheaper so you could buy two sets for a single set of higher quality stuff. I've heard rumors most race teams on Rotas junk 'em after a season or half because they're so warped but cheaper to replace.

Yes, thin spoke 9 spoke wheels look similar. And 5 spoke thick spoke wheels look similar. You can't really blame the companies though, that's trending, that's what's currently possible and there are only so many ways to reinvent the wheel. It's all minor differences.

The diameter and width is set in stone, more or less, as is the lug pattern. From there you decide if you like thick or thin spokes. It has to be an odd number to look right. Of course they all look the same. You can always paint them neon yellow like that S2k if you want them to stand out.

I don't understand the foreign market obsession. Why do you want to turn your 240 into a Silvia? Why do you want to badge your Acura Integra as a Honda Integra or your Saturn Astra as an Opel Astra or your Pontiac GTO as a Holden Monaro? Why do you want to mount a Euro plate on your BMW? Why do you want the Euro tail lights on your Jetta?

Do people genuinely like the different styling? Do some things offer superior functionality? Is some form of being a purist? Is it a matter of the grass always being greener on the other side? It's like a weird form of automotive hipsterism.

I meant spinning as in when they turning/rolling/the car is in motion.

Rota had a bad batch of wheels back in the day. They like the Japanese wheels are JWL and VIA certified and have even met TUV standards when they feel like selling wheels in Germany. I imagine a racing season is hell on wheels. If Rotas last that long I am sure 99.999% of us will be fine. And a lot of racing teams use Rotas same with a lot of guys at autocross.

I honestly don't care if companies copy each other and such. I just hate it when people claim only one company does it, when in reality a lot of wheel look similar to one another.

I am going with a black wheel. I think they make the car look more aggressive plus they won't look stupid. Although, I do wish it was a track car I would get the wheels in a crazy color like orange or something.

I think it's a mix of taste and the desire to be different
I will be first to say that the Jetta's euro tails look better than the normal US ones (IMO)
another thing are the Honda/acura badge swaps. I think 'tegs should all have Honda badges on them to be honest. it just looks more natural to me
Euro plates I get due to the cleaner designs, but the weird abreviations annoy the shit out of me

Well sometimes the Japanese version of cars can look somewhat better, and getting those parts(although I would just get replicas just to be cheap) make the car look nicer, but for the most part I think it is to be unique and show the world how much. . . I don't even know what they are trying to show. Just cause it is made in Japan doesn't make a part better. People will buy a set of coilovers just cause it came from Japan, although the way Japanese approach suspension is different(and not nearly as good) as the Germans do.

I think different would be the better word. Putting Honda badges on your Integra doesn't make it unique, it makes it like every Integra in Japan. Being unique to me is doing something different to my specifications, not what is run of the mill elsewhere.

Because US got the shitty stuff due to safety and emission laws. Best examples, US vs Euro Countach. US:

Also, Holden Monaro parts and technically cheaper than Pontiac body panels, thus the many conversions. Try searching prices for replacement GTO panels from GM and the cost to import parts from the Aussies. Aussies win.

Interesting and related video.

Are you going wider than stock? The FRS looks great with a mild fender flare and some meaty rubber. Color matching wheels also look great IF you have the car to back it up. Black is a safe bet, everyone likes black wheels.

this argument pops up at the forums that I am in quite a bit. I always say to each his own. It is very hard to justify $3,000 set of wheels for a car that is worth about the same.

However, you could flip a set of Volk TE37 for almost the same price as it was brand new. I guess they have great residual value in comparison to reps.

Another side note, Watanabes are copies of the original Minilites, Hayashis are copies of the original campagnolos. I guess it is how the quality is improved that makes the difference

It is hard to justify 3 grand period! Although, you will get a bitching wheel because of it.

There are always two sides. The one that supports Rota and the other that does not. I fall under the side that supports but I also love the for real deal things.

I have zero problems with replicas, as long as they don't try and pass it off as the real deal. Also, sometimes wheels aren't offered in certain sizes and a replica can take advantage of that. Also Rota RKRs are a replica of Watanabes. . .

I am aware of the RKR. I wish Rota would design a wheel and make it their own. After all the R&D it took to recreate a wheel you would think they would have a capability to design their own. I am sure there are plenty of Filipino graphic designers and engineers to create

I am sure they could do a great job if they wanted to. I think the copying of the design helps them save money in R&D, add that to the fact they have lower profit margins per wheel and they can sell it at a lower price.
